Life’s great moments deserve a toast…. and for us lady golfers we love to celebrate our small successes on the course with Birdie Juice and Par Bears.

It’s those fun little camaraderie building moments that make lady golfers such a nice community of gals who get out on the golf course to challenge themselves.  I have yet to play with a four-some where we didn’t end up having a great game and lots of laughs.  Actually, I wish more women would learn to play golf and experience first-hand how much fun this crazy game is.

So, where does Birdie Juice come in.  I blush to tell you that I played for almost 4 years and had never heard of birdie juice.  It wasn’t until I joined a golf league and one of the golfers in my four-some scored a birdie and next thing I knew we were all enjoying a shot of cinnamon whiskey to celebrate that moment.

So, for us newbies, a Birdie score is one stroke under Par for any hole. The term derives from early 20th century American slang term “bird” which means excellent, swell or awesome.  Birdie can be traced back to The Country Club in Atlantic City which lay claim to the first use of the word as mentioned on the USGA website.  In 1962 the US Greenkeepers’ magazine recounted a conversation (cr.1998/9) between golfers AB Smith, his brother, William P. Smith along and friend George Crump (who later built Pine Valley).  They were playing the Par 4 second hole at Atlantic City when AB Smith’s second shot went within inches of the hole. Smith said “that’s a bird of a shot” and was offered double money if he won with one under par. He was able to hole his putt to win with one under par and the three of them proclaimed the score as a “birdie.” Ok, that’s the origin of the term but how did it evolve to Birdie Juice?

So, the guys invented the term “birdie”, but leave it to the gals to give it real meaning and establish the term “birdie juice”

Rumor puts the origin of celebrating with Birdie Juice back in 2002 at the Gentle Creek Club in Prosper, Texas.  A bartender had a bottle of liqueur (whipped cream vodka) which was not selling. It had been given to him by the distributor, and on women’s play day, he gave the bottle to the women and told them to toast their birdies.  And like any great idea, this celebration became a tradition!

Birdie Juice Etiquette

So, when is it time to pull out that Birdie juice?  If there is enough time, at the hole where you scored the Birdie or right before the group tees off at the next hole.  The gal that scored the birdie pulls out her birdie juice, gives each golfer a small pour, and the official toast is “to birdies and friends!”

So, we get to celebrate birdies, but what about when you Par a hole?  Don’t worry, that score is celebrated with Par Juice (same stuff/different name) or Par Bears.  What are Par Bears? Grab yourself some bear shaped gummies and soak them in your favorite alcohol until you get the alcohol intensity you like.  Try using your favorite vodka, whiskey, tequila or whatever you have handy! Check out a great recipe for Par Bears under the Eat & Drinks section of the website!
